Franck VOGEL, « Le 1^er occidental autorisé à prendre des photos auprès des Bishnoïs »

Après un diplôme d’ingénieur agronome, Franck VOGEL décide de faire le tour du monde avec son sac à dos, son Canon et  1500 euros en poche.

Des milliers de photos plus tard et suite à une pause de méditation en Birmanie, une révélation devient résolution : il sera photo-reporter et traitera les problèmes sociaux et environnementaux.

Depuis 2007, il privilégie les relations entre l’homme et la nature pour montrer qu’il est possible de vivre en harmonie. En Inde, son sujet sur les Bishnoïs, un peuple du Nord de l’Inde entre le Rajasthan et le Pendjab, le plus ancien peuple écologiste du monde, en est le meilleur exemple.

Les Bishnoïs, un peuple qui a totalement intégré les enjeux du développement durable depuis le XVe siècle

Les Bishnoïs sont environ 800 000 personnes. Jamboji, leur prophète, a créé cette communauté au XVe siècle et ses préceptes sont toujours suivis à la lettre. Bishnoï signifie d’ailleurs 29 en dialecte hindi. Ils observent 29 principes simples qui leur permettent de vivre en harmonie avec la Nature. Règles spirituelles mais aussi très concrètes : gestion de l’eau, protection de la faune et de la flore, hygiène, un profond respect pour la femme…

J’avais 29 ans (un nombre symbolique) et c’était la première fois qu’un occidental était autorisé à prendre des photos pendant leurs pèlerinages, se souvient Franck VOGEL. C’était l’occasion de sensibiliser le monde à leur philosophie et de faire passer un message au monde avec comme but d’ouvrir les yeux des gens.

Franck VOGEL s’est rendu en Inde début 2007 et a réalisé ses images en trois fois deux mois, à des périodes importantes de l’année, rythmées par des fêtes et des célébrations.

Quelques photos ont été publiées en exclusivité dans GEO magazine pour le numéro spécial 30 ans en mars 2009. Ce reportage, plusieurs fois primé, fait actuellement le tour du monde. Ce peuple indien est aussi à l’honneur du film documentaire (52 min) de Franck Vogel et Benoît Ségur, Rajasthan, l’âme d’un prophète (France 5, 2011), et dans le Métro parisien depuis le printemps 2011. Le photographe s’est associé à la romancière Irène Frain pour réaliser ces fresques monumentales. Après une exposition à la station Montparnasse jusqu’au mi-juin,  la station Luxembourg prendra le relais à partir de décembre 2011 et pour une durée de 6 mois. C’est la galerie « Je veux être photographe » qui l’accueillera (18, rue de Savoie – 75006 Paris). Serge Lipao en est le commissaire d’exposition.

For Nicolae Buzaianu, a Swiss industrialist and energy specialist supporting the Bishnoi community in order to promote their message for the respect and protection of nature, the choice to commit to a nation that became aware of issues related to sustainable development since the 15th century, was a natural one.

The Bishnoi: The first eco-friendly nation since the 15th century

The Bishnoi are a nation of about 800,000 people living in Rajasthan in Northern India. They are considered as the first environmentalists of the world. Effectively, since the 15th Century and under the leadership of their prophet, Jamboji, the Bishnoi nation follows 29 regulations, a third of which are devoted to environmental issues. The Bishnois were pioneers in the field of environmental taxes and, for instance, obliged to plant at least one tree per year.

“I find it extraordinary that people have had the perception of the issues we face today, and have been facing, for more than five centuries.  It seems to me that we must take inspiration from the  Bishnoi, “said Nicolae Buzaianu.

Khamu Ram Bishnoi fights against plastic bag pollution since 2005. In 2010, he created the first dustbin, inspired by his journey in France with his friend Franck Vogel.

It was during the stay of Khamu Ram Bishnoi in France this Autumn, that Nicolae Buzaianu discovered the existence of the Bishnoi people and the message they carried.  Khamu Ram is the new incarnation of the commitment of the people in favour of environmental protection. Khamu Ram fights against plastic bags in the territory and was able to mobilize and unite around him many activists to stop the spread of this modern pollution.

For Buzaianu Nicolae, “the action of Khamu Ram proves that it is possible through local initiatives and engagement, to change the course of things and in turn change our habits. Khamu Ram is really a man in gold! “

An exportable model in Africa

Khamu Ram Bishnoi’s initiative entails the mobilization of the population regarding the problem of plastic bag refuse and to prove that local initiatives and engagement could provide the response to this major ecological challenge.

Khamu Ram Bishnoi’s initiative could be emulated especially within African countries. It is towards this end that Nicolai Began Buzaianu felt it most important to contribute to the actions of Khamu Ram and in turn to provide the means through which this message, worth gold to our planet, is spread to the people.

“I know the African continent very well, in particular Zambia, where I already support the Chippendale school. I am convinced that such initiatives could be worthily emulated in certain countries,” concludes Nicolae Bogdan Buzaianu.
